Examinations

The first time an animal is seen it will have a complete ophthalmic examination.  It is recommended to bring your animal fasted.  This begins by having the owner complete a new client form, an ophthalmic history form, and a financial responsibility form.  If your regular veterinarian has supplied additional information it would be most beneficial to bring it with you or have it faxed to our office.

Every examination is thorough and includes vision testing, glaucoma testing and possible pupil dilation for evaluation of the internal structures of the eyes.  Other tests will be performed as they apply to the presenting problem.  The entire preliminary examination may take up to two hours. So, be sure to allow plenty of time.

Following the exam, any findings will be explained in detail and recommendations will be made for treatment.  Most ophthalmic medications can be dispensed at the clinic.  If surgery is indicated, it can be scheduled at the time of examination.

Should surgery be required, The Elgin, Crestwood, and Naperville clinics are fully equipped for ocular surgery.  Intraocular,  extraocular and corneal surgeries, as well as glaucoma procedures, can be performed at most of our locations.

Certification Exams (CERF)

All of our board certified veterinary ophthalmologists are able to perform examinations on breeding animals for registration by the Canine Eye Registration Foundation Inc. (CERF), an organization founded to help decrease the incidence of painful and blinding hereditary eye diseases in dogs.  Eye clinics for breed clubs, and shows can be arranged.  CERF exams require a prepaid deposit on your credit card to schedule.  The owner is required to bring the pet’s date of birth and AKC information to the appointment.  The dog’s microchip will be scanned at the appointment.

*Horses may be trailered to our Naperville, and Crestwood facilities, barn calls are available at an additional fee.
